A strong earthquake, measuring 6.1 on the Richter Scale, shook Trinidad today.
It happened just after nine this morning at a depth of 38 miles, with
the epicenter identified as being off the northern coast of Trinidad.
A quake of such a magnitude typically can cause considerable damage to
poorly-built structures, and slight to moderate damage in well built
ones.
So far, we know that the extent of the damage was limited to cracks in
some buildings and broken glass from businesses in the city.
No deaths nor injuries were immediately reported.
The Hilton Hotel in Port of Spain was affected and its telephone lines left out of order.
