A dive team was sent to the area and located a vessel, MV Canis J, and conducted a search of the vessel's hull at approximately 2.48 p.m.

The divers reportedly found a large metal box measuring 13 inches by 11 inches by 30 inches attached to the hull.

The box was taken to Coast Guard headquarters at Staubles Bay, Chaguaramas, where it was opened in the presence of the master of the vessel, Coast Guard and Customs officials and members of the Organised Crime Narcotics and Firearms Bureau.

The box allegedly contained 108 lbs of compressed plant-like material, which was confirmed as marijuana when tested.

The drug has an estimated street value of $2.5 million.

The box and its contents were then handed over to Customs officials.

The is the second time in just over a month that illegal drugs have been found on the underside of a vessel, the statement said.

On September 5, national security officials also found marijuana in a box which was found on the underside of the MV Grenadines, a boat from Grenada.

The drug had a street value of $300,000.

The captain of that vessel denied any knowledge of the existence of the container on the boat's underside and said it was not part of the vessel.
