Saturday 16th, July 2005, Gouyave:
The village on Central, in
Gouyave Estate St. Johns was plunged into sadness and mourning on Saturday
morning when the severely chopped body of 13 yr. old Nielroy Tattie Mendes, of
the same address was found in a Banana stool, approximately three miles into the
Bope-land Estate overlooking the town of Gouyave. Family and an official Police
reports indicated that the deceased who is no stranger to the terrain on Friday
morning went in search of vine and wild grasses to feed his Rabbits but never
returned.
However sometime after 2:00PM that said afternoon residents in the
area including one of the deceased uncles armed with flashlights, dogs, and
cutlasses formed themselves into a group and decided to embark on an extensive
search of the area. The uncle of the deceased Chris Mendes told local Crime
Reporter/Photographer Keville Frederick that their search lasted into the early
hours of Saturday but turned up empty. He said when it was reported that his
nephew had gone missing. a youth in the area said he saw Nielroy in the bush
with a dog which other persons in the area confirmed. A missing persons report
was also filed at the police station at Gouyave and they also joined the search.
However at about 6:00am on Saturday several of Tatties, friends many of whom are
his age, resumed the search that turned up fruitful. It was reported and
confirmed that one of Tatties, friends Martin Jones stumbled on the body while
engaged in the search and alerted his friends who immediately broke the tragic
news to the Mendes Family who informed the police. Official reports are that
Mendes was chopped three times in the face, and also received a massive chop
under one of his feet. Investigators also said that the both arms of the
deceased were almost completely chopped off and from the conclusions of the
medical expert who visited the scene he died within minutes. GoGouyave News
learnt that the deceased only recently earned a place at a local secondary
school on the island having sat and passed the annual Common Entrance
Examinations. As the body of the deceased was removed from the high bushes of
Bope-land Estate by undertakers (La Qua Funeral Home), the Mendes family,
friends and neighbors of Central, wept openly, calling for the police to find
the person(s) responsible for the gruesome killing. Meanwhile by mid-afternoon
on Saturday local Police had detained the owner of the land believed to be a
65yr. old Indian farmer of Maran in St. Johns. One long-standing senior police
investigator described the killing as a passionate crime by a heartless
individual. We at WeThing.com & GoGouyave express our heartfelt condolences
to Ms. Nellis Mendes and family.
