Grenada moving ahead with public sector modernisation programme
User Rating: / 0

The Grenada Government is moving full speed ahead with its public sector modernisation programme, funded by the World Bank to the tune of 3.5 million dollars.

Two officials of the Bank responsible for the conduct of the programme met and held brief discussion on Tuesday with Prime Minister, Dr Keith Mitchell. According to Mitchell, the public sector modernisation is one of the legacies he would like to leave behind in his stewardship of the country.

He further stated that in all aspects administrative functions must be rearranged to work efficiently, in favour of the citizenry.

He says it is important for the development of the country. Public sector moderniaation is about improving the way Government does business, enhancing opportunities to public officers and delivering better service to Grenadians.

The World Bank’s Senior Public Sector Management Specialist in Poverty Reduction and Economic Management for Latin America and the Caribbean is Lisa Bhansali, who told the Prime Minister that systems are ready to go and they are in the process of hiring administrative and technical staff to begin the project.

According to Bhansali, the project seeks to create executive agencies to improve services in areas such as the Supreme Court Registry and the World Bank is pleased to be associated with such developments, particularly in small countries.

She introduced her counterpart Mario Sangines, who will soon be taking up the posting in the region on behalf of the World Bank focusing on improvements in public service systems.

It was his first visit to Grenada and he said after reports about the devastation by hurricanes Ivan and Emily, for what he has seen today, the Government has certainly done a remarkable job.

The 3.5 million dollar line of credit for the public sector modernisation programme will be repayable after 35 years with no interest.
